5 Tips for your next Garage Sale

 In Storage

We all love a good garage sale, and it’s coming up to that time of year again, the annual Garage Sale Trail. Now in its 7th year, it has grown into a weekend of garage sales across the country. For 2017 it is happening Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October. You can find out more about this great initiative here. Read on to pick up some handy garage sale tips to get you ready and give you a head start for the season.

We thought we’d share with you some good garage sale tips to get you ready for your own sale. Our friends from PODS Wisconsin, USA, shared these tips with us. I think its safe to say that we know that the folk in the US are pretty experienced with ‘yard sales’ and decluttering!

We all know that one man’s trash may be another man’s treasure. There are lots of reasons to hold a garage sale; and a lot of benefits, for both you and your community. Get your street to band together and hold a street-wide garage sale. Leverage of each other to bring more people to your event, and get to know your neighbours.

Get organised for your garage sale1. Get Organised

Do yourself a favour and get organised. Divide the garage into zones: Storage Zone, Charity Zone, Garage Sale Zone and Rubbish Zone. Relocate zoned items to a PODS container while de-cluttering and focus on the items to sell on your garage sale day.

If you don’t use it, sell it

2. If you don’t use it, sell it

People often hold onto items that they do not need. Organise your belongings by sentimental value and prune the items you are unsure of. It’s possible that the unsure items will sell for top dollar at the garage sale.

Drive a hard bargain

3. Drive a hard bargain

If someone wants your items, another person may want them too. Drive a hard bargain and get the most for your pre-loved treasures. Work out what items are negotiable, and what, if any, are not; and do this before your garage sale starts.

Donate what doesn’t sell to charity

4. Donate what doesn’t sell to charity

Donate what doesn’t sell to charity. After the sale is over, make a trip to your nearest Lifeline, Salvation Army, thrift store or donation bin and donate the items that did not sell. You never know who may be able to use your unwanted items.

Keep it tidy

5. Keep it tidy

Set some ground rules now that the garage is clean. These rules include keeping the parking area free from clutter. Sporting equipment and tools should be stored off the floor and in cabinets to keep the garage free from chaos.

A few quick more quick garage sale tips

Have lots of change handy. Think about how you price your items and what coins and small notes you might need on the day

Sort your items. For example – if you have a lot of clothes, divide them into mens, womens and childrens clothes boxes.

Price your items. Price items individually – not same-priced items in one box. Chances are that as the day gets on, items will get moved between boxes and mixed up.

Arrange sale zones. As you did when sorting your items for the garage sale, sell your items in zoned areas, to help people easily find like-items.
