5 packing supplies essential to a smooth move

Trust us — you need them. Jump online and get buying…

1.    Packing and storage boxes

When it comes to moving house, there are two types of people:

Person A) the one who packs their belongings neatly into double-walled storage boxes, or;

Person B) the one who chucks everything into bin bags and hopes for the best.

You don’t want to be person B. We’ve seen it, and it isn’t pretty!

So, well in advance of your big move, stock up on cardboard storage and moving boxes. You don’t have to buy dozens – if you start small, you can always buy more as you get closer to the finish line.

Pro tip: before loosening your purse strings, hunt around on online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree. You might find some recent movers looking to unload their packing boxes and bag yourself a bargain with some eco-friendly packing supplies!

2.    Moving blankets

If you’re opting for a traditional house moving service, or lugging your belongings from A to B on your own, the process can get a little ‘scratchy’. This is especially true if you’re transporting furniture and other easily-damaged valuables. In this instance, moving blankets are your best friend.

At PODS Moving & Storage, when you hire a PODS container you can also hire our Moving Blankets for a monthly fee.If name-brand moving blankets are going to break the bank, scour your local hardware store for dust blankets instead. These will do the trick and could save you some cash!

Note: these conveniently can double-up as stress blankets if the packing pressure gets too much. Put on some whale sounds and take 5.

3.    Bubble wrap

It’s fun for the kids and — who are we kidding — it’s fun for us too. Bubble wrap will add a brilliant layer of cushioning between your best-loved belongings and the cardboard they’re heading for.

Bubble wrap is relatively inexpensive, and use this fact to your advantage – because you’re going to need more than you think you will. When you’re lining the walls of all of your packing boxes with the stuff, that once-thick roll will start to diminish quickly.

If you’ve got easy access to additional resources, you’re free to top up when you need it. If it’ll take a couple days to get more bubble wrap out to you, stock up beforehand.

Bubble wrap is infinitely useful, so don’t worry if you end up with a little more than you need!

4.    Packing paper

Ever bought plates or glasses online? There’s a reason they come kitted out with packing paper.

Packing paper is a three-pronged attack against potential plate and glassware damage:

  • It keeps your items scratch-free
  • It reduces the impact of on-road bumps, sharp turns and abrupt stops
  • It plugs any empty spaces, preventing items knocking into each other

Don’t cut corners and use paper you have lying around the house – this will work out to be much more expensive. You can usually buy big sheets of packing paper in bulk with a quick online search.

5.    Packing tape

Last but certainly not least comes packing tape. If there’s one thing you don’t want to cut corners on, it’s tape quality.

Not only is it absolutely infuriating to fiddle around with tape that splits down the middle when you’re already in a time crunch, the last thing you want is for your packing and delivery boxes to come undone mid-transit.

Packing tape doubles down as a handy way to keep your bubble wrap in place, and it’ll secure and reinforce the sides and edges of cardboard if you’re worried about using second-hand moving boxes.
