9 Things To Do When Moving With A Pet

 In Moving

Moving with a pet may seem like it’s easy; but there are a few things you need to keep in mind. These 9 tips will make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Take A Few Shorter “Prep” Trips: If you’re going to be moving over a considerable distance, then you want to make sure that your pet can handle the trip. Take a few “prep” trips to get them used to staying in the car/van for a while.

Change Your Vet (If Needed): If you’re moving more than 50 miles away from your current home then you’re going to need a new vet. Talk to your current vet to see if they have any recommendations for the area that you’re moving to.

Bring Food/Treats: A big part of this trip is going to be keeping your pet calm. Bring along some of their favorite food or treats and reward them during the drive. Keep an eye out for vomit though!

Crate Your Pet: The best thing to do is to have your pet in a crate or cage. Having them wander around the car/moving van is not only annoying but also potentially dangerous.

Gather All Needed Paperwork: Sometimes you need to show paperwork for your pets at certain state lines. It’s better to be safe than sorry so bring immunization records and other relevant paperwork.

Bring Toys: Toys are another way to keep your pet occupied during the trip. Make sure you have his/her favorites!

Take Bathroom Breaks Often: Moving days are stressful. The last thing you want to do is clean up an “accident” so prevent them from happening in the first place.

Have Someone Available To Be Right Next To The Pet At All Times: Most domesticated species are very emotional (more than you would think). Seeing someone that they know can have a huge calming affect.

Make Their New Home Feel Like Home: Once you’ve completed the move make sure you pay attention to your pet’s needs and do everything possible to make them feel at home!
