What’s the difference between indoor and outdoor storage?
If you’re looking to store large items like jet-skis, kayaks, trailers or cars, then an outdoor storage yard is probably for you. Be sure to consider whether the items you’re storing can withstand the outside elements – think temperature changes, storms and pests.
On the flipside, if you need to store furniture or other household items that you don’t have space for, an indoor self-storage unit could be the way to go. Indoor facilities are often safer, climate-controlled and keep your belongings out of the weather.
What is mobile self-storage?
Mobile self-storage is a convenient, weather-resistant solution that works particularly well if you’re unable to transport items yourself. Here’s how it works with PODS: a truck will drop off an individually lockable storage container (a ‘POD’) to your desired location for you to fill with the belongings you want stored. If you’d prefer for someone else to load your items, PODS can also recommend companies for packing, loading and unloading. Once the packing is done, a truck will then return to take your POD to the next location – whether that’s your new home or one of our secure storage centres.
Unlike most mobile storage units, PODS are made of a solid, steel frame construction able to withstand winds up to 170km per hour. They also have a water-resistant seal, meaning moisture, rodents and insects will not get in and destroy your valuables.
How much does renting storage cost?
Prices vary depending on what you are looking for and how much inventory you have. Some facilities might also charge different prices depending on states and distance from the CBD. What storage size do I need?

Do I need insurance for self-storage?
It’s a good idea to take out insurance to cover your stored belongings and a good place to start is asking your home insurance provider whether or not they cover items in storage, specifically when stored off your property.
If your home insurance doesn’t cover your self-storage unit, you might want to discuss protection cover with us or your chosen provider. PODS offers Contents Protection Cover for your stored items to give you peace of mind in the unlikely event that something happens and our policy cost starts from $1.40 per $1,000 of nominated value of goods, per month.
